Natural Learning
In many earth-based cultures the circle of life forms the foundation for how people live their lives in balance with one another and the Earth. The circle represents the four directions, the cycles, the seasons, the stages of life, and many life lessons.
This EarthWalk circle, follows many Traditional Teachings from around the world, and informs and guides the EarthWalk Learning Journey.
All the natural lessons, skills, knowledge and abilities we are learning at EarthWalk, are guided by the following principles: Nature; Outdoor living; Community and Stewardship.
Nature, in the East, is where the sun rises and where the inspiration for learning is always present. This is represented by the seed of the white pine; holding our greatest potential. Nature is the foundation for all of our learning.
Outdoor Living, in the South, is where we focus and work hard in the mid-day sun. This is represented by the young white pine sprout, where we need to strengthen our competence and abilities to live outdoors in all seasons.
Community, in the West, where the sun sets, is where we join together to share our stories and strengthen our relationships. This is represented by the white pine tree, the “Tree of Peace”. Here we are able to discover our individual gifts and practice peaceful living with others.
Stewardship, in the North, land of the mid-night sun, is where we develop wisdom to be responsible stewards to our human and natural communities for generations to come. This is represented by the white pine cone. What kind of “seeds” are we planting, for future generations?
